Interview session with Nel Harrison and Krisha Saxon at Silver Ant Studios in Mpls, MN
Date : Monday, April 3rd 2006
Phil : What brought about this Dixie Chicks parody?
Nel : What inspired the Dixie Chicks parody of 'Not Ready to Make
Nice' was the fact that every day that I babysat my grandson and we go
to Natkins site which is chicksrockchicksrule.com and we would play
Dixie Chicks videos. Then the Chicks came out with this new video.
There's no way I can watch it with my grandson - - it wouldn't be a fun
thing for my grandson. They got the right to talk about their pain, yet
we have the right to make a parody about it. So we started to make a
parody. I wrote the lyrics and we got the vocals down. We started to
practice, Krisha and myself. Aaron is producing, working on recording
the drum tracks and everything else. So it will be a comedy parody with
me doing the lead vocals. As a comedian I can do that, I can't do
it as a singer. Krisha could actually do it as a singer. She's doing
the lead female role. So, that's the story behind what inspired the
parody. The fact that I can't show their video to my grandson. Nor can
I sing along with my grandson.
Phil : So, you can't show their video to your grandson.
Nel : No, it's dark. They spent no money on it. So we figured why
should we spend to much on our video. So we're going to shoot it - -
every word means something. Every lyric and every phrase has something
to do with the Chicks history. And, everything they've announced
publicly over the last three years leading up to their new single and
new album. I think Chicks fans will hate it. And, I think Country fans
will love it, cause lets face it everyone likes to do it in the back of a
Chevy truck. I think the country fans will like it. But, what it really
is, it's not pro or con anything, it's just a whole ridicule of the
country music scene and the Dixie Chicks. Doing it in a funny way.
Phil : What does Krisha want to say about the parody?
Krisha : Well, it's been good to break out of the box and be goofy with
this song. It's a duet with Nel and I on vocals. I actually think the
Chicks were great. They had that country edge that stood out. I like
the parody, everything fits so well to the song with alot of meaning
even as it's a big joke.
Phil : So we're here at Silver Ant Studios recording tracks for the parody song.
Nel : We're doing all the drums and bass lines here. I think there will
be some tamborine and a french horn. Aaron is producing it with the
Music Green House. He's bringing together the musicians.
Phil : Will you be performing the parody?
Nel : We will be getting out and performing it fairly regular along
with what I think we will call 'The Border Control' which is the next
parody. There will be more parodies for a Nel Harrison comedy album
with ten songs all together. This is song one and the Chicks album
doesn't come out until late May and they just started playing their
video on VH1 today April 3rd.
Phil : So this parody album and video project is a Nel Harrison production.
Nel : You can check out all my work on google video - - - visit the site and do a search for
Nel Harrison at www.video.google.com I'm producing it, Aaron
with Music Green House is doing the music side production and I'm doing the lyrics and performance production.
Phil : How many Brokeass Jokers are there?
Nel : Well, I created Brokeass Jokers in 2005. In 2004 I had the
Standup Six comedy tour. I'll have a west coast tour from July 7th
through Aug 11th, 2006. Hopefully before that we will have some of
these parodies done. Get the album ready to go. We're looking to do the
Vegas thing - - start doing performances with the parodies and put a
whole show together. It will be a Brokeass Jokers production featuring
Nel Harrison and Krisha. We'll be out there blasting out parodies.
Phil : Do you like the Dixie Chicks?
Nel :
I've always loved them. I always thought they were a great band.
It isn't a matter of being a fan or a non fan. It's just a matter of
waiting for three years to hear the next work and the first thing they
do is release an album that says they're pissed off at the world. Its
so parody perfect. I could do rock but country is a natural parody - -
- country is funny.
