For those that venture about the NE Mpls area, there is to be found
among the mix of bars, art galleries and restaurants, an upcoming hot
scene spot called Club Underground. Which holds a place for music down
under beneath the Spring Street bar and grill. The Club brings in a
crowd mix out to catch a few bands and perhaps make a night out for the
mix of music on hand. The band up first was 'Thosquanta' with Adam
Powell on guitar and vocals, Jen Plume with vocals, Dave Erickson on
bass and Nic Heidt on second guitar. This a project which Adam Powell
of U.C.K.F. started which has a dark industrial edge. With the lack of
live drummer, the bass player took to the drum riser which was drum
free for this band. The vocals of Jen flow softly and at ease with the
more so driving vocals of Adam as the band set to beat a dark pop mix
of songs. Tomhanks is a one man techno machine with perhaps a somewhat
hollywood nightlife swashbuckler approach to swoon in the crowd. The
second to last band often has the advantage with the crowd size as
those that filter in gather and some among the crowd will need to
depart early. Ear Candy brought out their retro fashion look with
identical wigs, sunglasses and white outfits to make a pop stance and
impact on the crowd. Here we find Lady Bon Bon at keyboards and
handling the drum machine as all three deliver vocals and the dance
routine for each song. Jordasche and Elizee flesh out the threesome
imagery as they move to their electro new wave beat. Their song titles
include 'Kung Fu Sister' and ' Wild Rice and Peaches' which may give
one a good idea of the dance fever pop swing that reaches out to shake
the crowd into a good time frenzy. As should be expected, there is
always a good time frenzy with Uber Cool Kung Fu. With their album '3',
they have a well paced set of material that brings forth a Uber Cool
roller coaster ride with the songs 'Letting Go', 'Drag Queen' and
'Tonite' as good examples of what they bring to stage. Their electro
drum kit edge and guitar work are in constant motion as the vocals
reach out to pull in the crowd. Their version of 'Daydream Believer'
fits right into the overall pulse of their set of material. One may
look at the electro punk
scene as having somewhat of a twist and shout mix that often echoes the
new wave era of the B-52's and Devo. Some of the bands are more so
industrial or techno while others are pop heavy.
