At the Urban Wild Life Club
|
The silence that rises up between the voices in the crowd grew fond
with anticipation for a clash of metal on the shores of symphonic
intrigue within the darkness that is the night. The strings of the bass
and violin along with the stage lights ushered in an evening in the
Twin Cities with 'Aesma Daeva'.
There is no space on the stage for a grand piano at the
Urban Wildlife club and the rock room does not have the seating of an
orchestra hall. Yet, the space on this evening brought forth the
elements of sound and light needed to present the symphonic metal of
these six musicians. Mellisa, Theresa, Earl, John , Eden and Tim worked the stage as 'Aesma Daeva'.
Back in the Twin Cities after a well received tour to Mexico - this evening
at the Urban would turn some heads and rally in some new fans. A good
crowd mix gathered for this show with a nearly packed room as Mellisa in
black cape appeared on stage and the band struck forth a performance
and musical array that held steadfast and true to form.

AESMA
DAEVA doesn't play too many local shows, but when they do it always
seems to be an event. They recently played the Minneapolis mayhem fest
in april and opened for Nightwish as well as doing small tours in the
U.S. and Mexico. But this was the first official "local" show since
January, and the first time alot of people saw them with new members
Eden (ex-ATPH,) Tim (ex-slighted,) and Theresa. Their music is best
described as symphonic / classical metal. Up front is the amazing
opera-trained vocals of Melissa along with guitarist and songwriter
John and the root of all evil himself Earl Root on guitar. Melissa has
recently relocated to the cities full time (she was residing in boston
and flying out for shows) so expect a more regular schedule from them.
They have 3 cd's out on root of all evil records and have a fourth on
the way.

All in the crowd, no matter what their preference for music may be,
seemed well taken in to the overall impact of vocals and musicianship.
With the voice of lead singer Mellisa along with the combined chemistry
and dedicated enthusiasm that was well apparent. An operatic feat of
expertise merged with the attributes of metal. Which enhanced this
evening in the Twin Cities with a well scored good time for scene fans
and observers alike. The
stage size of the Urban somewhat held back the movements of Eden on
bass and Theresa with violin. Tight quarters where Theresa nearly bowed
Earl a few times and Eden on bass had no chance to move up front for a
full string section interaction with the crowd. One may be hard pressed
to find among rock-metal bands the voice and stage presence that
Mellisa brings to stage. John and Earl were able to work the stage
fairly well and Tim was tight while tucked away back at drums. A strong
performance within the tight quarters along with the appealing downtown
nightlife. No effort to
dissect or examine the intricate aspects within their music could
reveal what one will find with a good listen to their recorded material
and live performance. One
can find their recorded music on these most recent albums 'The New
Athens Ethos' and 'The Eros of Frigid Beauty'. They are likely to be
seen playing the Twin Cities area in between recording sessions and
mini-tours.
